Woodcuts

When our illustration professor gave us a deceptively complex assignment description that amounted to "Do whatever you want; just make it good," I happened to be re-reading one of my all-time favorite novels, Empire Falls by Richard Russo. The novel centers on the daily lives of struggling citizens of a dying industrial town, and builds to a tragic climax. I decided to make a serires of woodcuts illustrating the novel's central metaphors.
